Pragmatism in Education

Introduction

Behind every school and every teacher is a set of related beliefs a “philosophy of education” that influences what and how students are taught. A philosophy of education may influence what subjects or topics are taught, how they are taught, and perhaps more importantly, the supporting beliefs and values that are taught, both implicitly and explicitly, within and around the core curriculum. It also represents answers to questions about the purpose of schooling, a teacher's role, and what should be taught and by what methods according to many philosophies and philosophers.

Pragmatism in Education
Pragmatism was emerged in the 19th century in America, it defines the truth in terms of the usefulness of a belief, it is used to solve or evaluate intellectual problems. “Pragma” means work is done. It is a belief that reality is always changing and one must learn best by applying its experiences as problem arises. Its philosophy in education is “learning by doing”.

* Satisfaction of felt wants of human being by fulfilling interests and abilities.
* Cultivation of dynamic mind
* Changing the behavior of man
* Continuous reconstruction and reorganization of experiences

2.Methods and curriculum
The curriculum of pragmatism is centered to the students in making life decision; it aims to help students to learn the process of problem solving and uses social media to share ideas, insights and experiences. In such philosophy, learning must be based on the child’s experiences as well as occupations and activities. The subjects included in pragmatic curriculum are language, history, hygiene, geography, physics, mathematics, science, domestic science for girls, agriculture for boys and psychology sociology.

3. Role of teacher
* Teacher is a facilitator not authoritarian
* Helper, guider and philosopher
*Suggest problems to his pupils  to stimulate them  find by themselves the solutions which will work
* Encourage students to do research to enhance their analytical skills in future
* offer opportunities for the natural development of children 's innate qualities


4.Role of students
* learn and experience the process of problem solving to become better functioning members of society
* Develop their social &interpersonal skills and to set and achieve personal goals
