Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD)

I’ve started teaching in September 2016 at National Brotherhood School, all students in my classes were good and ready to start their year fresh. In grade 7 there were 18 students one of them was sitting in the back when I begin introducing my self and start knowing there names. That student named Imad, was sitting in an impolite way and looking sharply at me. I knew everyone’s name and left him till the end; and asked '' what’s your name dear ?'' He said Imad in a strict way. I started introducing the curriculum. All students showed me acceptance except Imad who was in a state of constant moving; he can't sit still, always standing up, moving a lot and making fun of his friends. At first, I asked him to sit down and stop moving , but his eyes were giving me sharp looks and telling me indirectly that he is ready for a fight. During the whole lesson, Imad didn't stop moving and he was about to climb the walls. When the session ended, I went to the principle to ask him about this weird student, and here was the shock. He told me that Imad is a special case in his class. Here, I knew my hunch was not out of nothing, because I knew that something wrong was with that boy.

We must be aware of students with special cases. These students attract the teacher with their weird manners like interrupting teacher or other students while talking, trouble waiting their turn, difficulty staying still or quiet, lacking focus most time, avoiding tasks that need mental efforts, daydreaming...Sometimes these children are labeled as troublemakers, and criticized because of their hyper activity and indiscipline. These acts are associated with mental disorder called attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD or ADD). One thing people always pair with ADHD is how smart a person is. However, research shows that patients of ADHD could be super super smart, high, and medium to low IQ levels.

Back to my case, Imad, I thought deeply of how to deal with him. When I entered the class, I did my usual class routines so that my students don't notice anything abnormal. Then,I gave an appropriate supervision for Imad in which I encouraged him to work with his friends to motivate him and push him up. Also, I eliminated everything in class that may cause distractions to help him always be on full focus and avoid daydreaming. I did an investigation about Imad's life and get some information about his interests, desires, likes, dislikes ... Hence, I worked on building a good relationship between us. It was not easy at all to grab his attention, but it was not easy either for me to give up on him. I took Imad and my other students on a trip to have fun and do some activities. Besides,I focused on giving praise and feedback every time Imad interacts with us in class.

Solving this case was a big challenge for me but I worked hard to achieve my goal by following some strategies. First, I tend to give him work that suits his level and skill of thinking because I had noticed that if the task is too long or needs large mental efforts to solve it, Imad won’t even try to. Second, when I ask students to do a homework, I allow Imad to choose 3 out of 5 questions to solve which reinforces his self confidence and stimulates him to solve more. Third, when I give students an activity to be done in class, I give Imad hints and keywords to help him solve appropriately. Fourth, I encouraged him to be active in class in which he is the one responsible for erasing the board and all the manual stuff that must be done in class that helps him feel involved. Finally, I had a direct and regular communication with his family at home to keep in touch , and observe his movements and actions. All these behaviors enhanced the relation between Imad and me. and made him feel beloved and safe which motivated him to pay attention and work more in class.

In the end, I want to mention that punishing and yelling won't help ADHD students to learn better or behave good.Instead, we can use many other ways to deal with them. It is very important to analyze the personality of the child before dealing with him . Furthermore, you must be very patient with ADHD students since they are very angry people and might be aggressive sometimes, so you should indicate the perfect time to remind him about the consequences that he might face if he broke the rules.

Those methods helped me personally in dealing with an ADHD student and he became better , politer, and motivated to watch out for his school and how to deal with his anger whenever he feels uncomfortable .
